IPL Skin Rejuvenation & Hair Removal
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a non-invasive (non-ablative) and non-abrasive treatment that uses high intensity pulses of visible light to improve the appearance of skin problems.
Since its introduction over 20 years ago, Intense Pulsed Light or IPL technology revolutionized the practice of hair removal and skin treatment.
Photo-rejuvenation assists in the treatment of many skin conditions including Sun damage (age spots, sun sports, melisma, pigment, uneven skin tone), Enlarged pores and skin laxity, Wrinkles and fine lines, Vascular lesions (broken capillaries, small blood vessels, spider threads/veins telangiectasia, rosacea) as well as the treatment of active acne and acne scarring. IPL uses the power of light to reverse the visible signs of ageing reduce or, in some instances, even remove unwanted blemishes like pigmentation, broken capillaries, sun damage, age spots and redness.
By using Medical grade IPL technology and the Spectrum machine, outstanding results are achievable in the rejuvenation of the face, hands and body. Medical IPL Photorejuvenation provides an effective way to correct sun damage, reduce uneven colour such as sun spots and rosacea, smooth wrinkles, reduce spider veins, reduce acne, acne scarring and refine texture.
WHAT CONDITIONS CAN IPL PHOTOREJUVENATION TREAT?
Sun damage, sun spots and age spots
Uneven skin tone, melasma, pigments
Vascular lesions , broken capillaries, small blood vessels, spider threads/veins telangiectasia, rosacea
Acne and scarring
fine lines, wrinkles and skin laxity
Pore tightening and ingrown hairs
IPL rejuvenates the skin by primarily addressing the colour and texture of the skin
HOW DOES IPL PHOTOREJUVENATION WORK?
Various wavelengths of light are used to photothermally damage target tissue; to remove pigmentation & capillaries/redness.
Skin texture is refined by stimulating new collagen and causing collagen contracture through heating and mild inflammatory skin response.
Light energy absorbed by the chromophores changes to heat energy effectively causing targeted destruction of the pigmented areas (brown or red)
Skin texture improves through controlled dermal heating, and micro- wounding which activates growth factors and repair.
Studies show dermal thickening with increased normal collagen in the dermis after treatment.
IPL uses the power of light to reverse the visible signs of ageing. You can reduce or, in some instances, even remove unwanted blemishes like pigmentation, broken capillaries, sun damage, age spots and redness.
HOW CAN A PHOTOFACIAL HELP ME?
IPL skin rejuvenation is a common cosmetic procedure designed to produce a clear, healthy and beautiful complexion. There are a variety of specific skin issues that can be solved using IPL, from certain types of conditions, to blemishes, wrinkles, the effects of ageing, and more. IPL skin rejuvenatio or photorejuvenation can help to reverse some sun damage, even out facial color as well as improve tone and texture in the process. In other words, photofacial treatments can:
reduce the severity of acne
reduce the appearance of or eliminate sun spots and freckles Lightening and removing “sun spots”, “age spots”, and brown blotches on the face, neck, chest, hands and other areas of the body
Helping to control flushing
treat skin flushing and skin redness
reduce the appearance of scars (acne, chickenpox, etc.)
reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
treat vascular lesions (broken capillaries, blood vessels, telangiectasia, rosacea) Lightening and reducing redness, rosacea, dilated blood vessels and “broken” blood vessels on the face, neck and chest
It also has a lesser effect of improving skin texture through collagen stimulation and improves pore size minimally by temporarily reducing oiliness
improve facial contour
boost collagen and elastin production
IPL photofacial treatments also have an impact on acne, reducing sebaceous gland activity as well as constricting blood vessels to reduce the appearance of broken capillaries or spider veins and targeting dark pigment, which lessens the appearance of dark spots.
HOW DOES THE IPL TECHNOLOGY WORK?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Skin Rejuvenation uses the power of light to reverse the visible signs of ageing.
The Spectrum IPL system produces a broad beam of highly concentrated light focused on the specific parts of your skin that you are treating. The IPL device itself is gently pressed onto the skin, with a smooth, transparent surface emitting the light on the targeted areas. This light is filtered to a wavelength that is selectively absorbed by the target tissues with minimal effect on surrounding tissues. The light produced by IPL treatment is absorbed more by pigmented tissue than non-pigmented tissue causing thermal damage to pigmented cells. This absorption produces heat, which in turn alters the undesirable target tissues. This light helps to spur on the production of collagen, which will help to fill in lines and wrinkles or shallow scarring, while also reducing redness, discolouration, and spots. The body’s natural healing process then absorbs the affected tissue and allows for re-growth of healthy tissue. The duration (milliseconds) and energy of the light pulse are adjusted for your specific skin characteristics to achieve maximum benefit. Depending on what is being treated, the exact wavelength range can be adjusted to optimise results.
The Spectrum IPL has the ability to penetrate the skin with minimal skin damage. Like laser, it works by filtering various wavelengths of light to react with specific skin conditions, effectively stimulating skin regeneration in the epidermis as well as the dermis via increased collagen and elastin fibre production by gently injuring the deep layers of the skin while sparing damage to its outer layers, inducing a natural wound healing mechanism.
This controlled injury imposed on the dermis, which is below the skin’s most superficial layer, the epidermis, is a major factor in what leads to younger, fresher, tighter skin.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light technology. It is an FDA and TGA-approved and patented form of treatment which has been shown to be both safe and effective. IPL is also known as photorejuvenation. Because it is a relatively simple and straightforward procedure, with few concerns in terms of either side effects, recovery time, or the level of invasiveness with the treatment itself, IPL is continuing to become a more widely utilised choice.
IPL technology is based on the same principle as laser but emits a broad spectrum of pulsed light to reach several layers of the skin simultaneously. The results continue to improve long after the treatment, as IPL stimulates your own natural collagen to rebuild and rejuvenate the skin. A course of treatments are required to obtain optimum results, however this may vary according to individual requirement.
Instead of a single wavelength of light as with a laser, IPL uses a bright light in front of which filters are placed which filter out most wavelengths except those taken up by pigment and blood vessels, depending on the filter used. The light energy penetrates just below the skin's surface, damaging either the melanin (skin pigment) or blood vessels. The body's natural skin repair mechanisms then remove the damaged tissue and produce a smoother skin appearance. It will usually take 3-6 treatments to see a significant result and treatments can be spaced out every 3-4 weeks.
The advantage to IPL systems is that downtime is usually very minimal. Clients may experience slight darkening of pigment before they lighten. The procedure itself is usually described as feeling like a rubber band being popped on the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q; HOW DOES IPL SKIN REJUVENATION WORK?
A; IPL uses a bright light in front of which filters are placed which filter out most wavelengths except those taken up by pigment and blood vessels, depending on the filter used. The light energy penetrates just below the skin's surface, damaging either the melanin (skin pigment) or blood vessels. The body's natural skin repair mechanisms then remove the damaged tissue and produce a smoother skin appearance.
Q; WHAT IS THE PROCESS/WHAT DO I DO BEFORE IPL TREATMENT?
A; Stay out of the sun for any prolonged amount of time for a week before your treatment. Avoid spray tanning for at least a week before your treatment. Have any worrisome spots of moles checked out by your GP. Also check with your GP that you aren't on any medication or have any condition to prevent you undergoing ipl treatment. Do not wax for at least 2-3 weeks prior. Do not pluck at least 1-2 weeks before your treatment. DO shave 1-2 days beforehand!
Q; WHAT IS THE IPL PROCESS, WHAT HAPPENS DURING IPL TREATMENT?
A; Inside the beauty room you will have explained to you how the process works and fill in the forms. You will then sit or lay on the table bed with the areas to be treated exposed, any make up will be removed.
You will put on safety goggles to protect your eyes from the flashes, and conductive gel will be applied to the area. The hand piece will be applied to your skin and there will be a flash and warm tingling feeling with a cold feeling around the outside. This will continue until the area is treated.
Q; DOES IPL HURT? WHAT DOES IPL FEEL LIKE?
A; There may be mild discomfort during the skin rejuvenation treatment, but most patients tolerate treatment of dilated blood vessels or age spots/freckles and fine lines easily. The first treatment is usually the “zingiest.” As your skin begins to clear, the treatments usually become even more comfortable.
IPL has been described as feeling like popping a rubber band on your skin or a prickly heat - but it's only for a second and fades immediately. The Spectrum handpieces are cooled by the inbuilt cooling unit to provide relief.
It may help you to drink sweet drinks or eat something sweet directly before your treatment. cold packs can be used on the area before and after.
Q; MY SKIN IS QUITE TANNED/OLIVE/BROWN/BLACK - WILL IPL HAIR REMOVAL WORK ON ME?
A; Look at the colour of the area you would like to be treated and compare to the Fitzpatrick skin tone chart.
There is a strong chance results may be lessened if your skin tone is very dark or overly tanned. IPL has best results on pale skin.
Q; I AM MALE AND WOULD LIKE MY FACE TREATED, WILL IPL SKIN REJUENATION TREATMENTS AFFECT MY FACIAL HAIR?
A; Yes. Any area IPL is performed on, even if just for the benefit of a skin rejuvenation treatment, will likely also result in permanent hair loss/reduction.
Q; HOW LONG UNTIL I SEE RESULTS FROM IPL SKIN REJUVENATION?
A; It is possible to see results as soon as 2 days after treatment. Personally my pores and skin laxity are always tighter after just a couple of days. Many clients have noticed a reduction in rosacea and fine lines in just a week after their first treatment. For more dramatic results, Most people need 3-5 months, which consists of a full series of 3-5 treatments about 1 month apart. You can see some improvement with each treatment, but it’s common for your response to be slightly different to each treatment. The more sun damage or redness you have, the more likely you are to need more treatments. Some cases of severe redness or brown spots require more than 5 treatments. Expect to see gradual clearing over time.
Q; HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED FOR IPL SKIN REJUVENATION?
A; this is very dependent on each individual, their skin types, and the area they are having treated, and so no exact number of treatments can be guaranteed. The average number of treatments necessary is about 3-6..
Q; I HAVE TATTOOS, CAN I STILL GET IPL?
A; If you have a tattoo in the region you would like treated, I will treat the skin around the tattoo. The skin with the tattoo on it must be left alone as the IPL light will affect (brake up or lighten/fade) the ink or burn the tattooed skin.
Q; IS IPL SAFE?
A; IPL is widely used and there are no restrictions on its use in WA.
IPL has been used for many years and is seen as a safe and effective method for removing unwanted hair and various skin rejuvenations.
IPL uses no UV light so there is not a cancer risk. As we use infrared light, green glasses must be worn to protect your eyes. Side effects can occur but are very uncommon. Problems can occur if the skin is tanned excessively within a couple of weeks of treatment, or the area has been exposed to sun excessively or tanning beds prior to treatment, or if the patient is using roaccutane or has epilepsy, or is pregnant.
I use IPL treatment on myself and personally believe it is extremely safe and extremely effective, however it is each individual's own choice and responsibility to research if they are unsure and seek advice from their medical practitioner, especially if you have any medical conditions. If you are taking roaccutane (isotrein), suffer from epilepsy or are pregnant - conditions are not suitable for IPL.
Q; ARE THERE ANY AFTER EFFECTS OR PROBLEMS FROM IPL?
A; How you appear after a treatment will depend on the type of treatment performed, all of which should be explained to you beforehand. Some treatments (such as IPL for photo rejuvenation) may produce some mild, temporary redness, and darkening and then flaking-off of freckles. Others, such as laser treatments for some birthmarks, may produce intense bruising and swelling. Still others, such as treatments for acne scarring, may produce swelling and redness.
Q; WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE RIGHT AFTER THE IPL FACIAL TREATMENT AND WHAT IS THE HEALING TIME?
A; For veins, generally, the skin looks slightly redder after the treatment for two to five days. Makeup can be used starting right after the treatment, as long as it is applied and removed very gently. Rarely, there is bruising, which can take 1-2 weeks to resolve.
For freckles and age spots, the spots generally look darker for 3-7 days. Crusting can occur, which may last up to ten days. The lesions will then begin to clear and will generally be resolving at one month. Remember, it takes an average of 3-5 treatments to clear age spots.
Q; HOW LONG WILL RESULTS FROM A PHOTOFACIAL LAST?
A; That depends on how much sun exposure your skin gets after your laser treatments. If you are in the sun a lot and do not use sunscreen, the underlying issues, whether they are redness or brown spots, will return. But if you take good care of your skin and keep it protected from the sun, your skin will continue to look good with annual maintenance treatments.
If you want to maintain collagen growth, we currently recommend a treatment every 6-12 months. Other conditions are more variable. If you are very red, once or twice a year may be needed.
